A piece of Lancaster Bomber with a remarkable story to tell

This Masterpiece coin has been struck from FIVE OUNCES of Sterling Silver and features a single stylised Royal British Legion Poppy® as well as the Lancaster plane dropping the Royal British Legion Poppy over The Mall – selectively plated in vivid red ink. The result is an exceptional 3-dimensional effect.

But the incredibly rare facet of this year’s coin is that it features a genuine piece of Lancaster Bomber.

You see, the silver plane that adorns your coin has been made from Avro Lancaster PA474.  Originally built in 1945 for use in strategic bombing in the Far East, it was assigned to Photographic Reconnaissance duties in Africa before appearing in two WWII movies – Operation Crossbow and The Guns of Navarone. It was finally restored back to wartime standard in 1973 and has been in service with the Battle of Britain memorial flight for FIFTY years.

The powerful artwork on the coin depicts the tradition of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight of dropping poppies over The Mall to commemorate those who lost their lives.

This is important because the original piece of Lancaster included in the Masterpiece is from the exact same plane that has participated in this symbolic act of Remembrance by the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Ultra-high relief

The metal from the Avro Lancaster was recovered from the starboard outer engine housing and once it had been melted down and poured into a mould, it was cooled and cleaned to create the high-relief plane.  But even then, this is NOT a cast piece.

The finish is a stunning antique appearance, meaning it has all the detail that you expect from a commemorative coin but allows you to touch the coin and hold a genuine, iconic piece of history in the palm of your hand.
