The Rio 2016 Olympic Silver Coin Set
The race is on: Own the coins we should never have been able to get!
This year Rio De Janiero hosts the 2016 Olympics - the first time a South American country has ever hosted the Summer Games. To honour the occasion, Brazil has issued a brand new, limited edition silver coin set.
Olympic coins are generally reserved exclusively for the host nation and with Brazil’s population at 200 million, these coins have been extremely hard to get hold of.
200 Million Brazilians. Just 50 Coins
In fact, Brazilian Reais – the country's circulating currency – normally can't even be exported. But against all the odds, Olympic coins have been granted a special dispensation, allowing us to get hold of just 50 sets.
Let me put that into context for you. There are 200 million Brazilians. Only 25,000 sets have been authorised. There aren’t enough coins for Brazil – let alone the rest of the world.
An Olympic Legacy dating back to Ancient Greece
Today you can become one of the few collectors outside Brazil to own one of these very special coin sets and, at the same time, become a part of an Olympic legacy that dates all the way back to the days of Ancient Greece.
The coins are produced by The Brazilian Mint with the designs being carefully considered and chosen by the Rio 2016 Organising Committee.
Each coin in this set bears an exclusive design depicting an Olympic sport in front of a famous Rio landmark: rowing on Lagoa Rodriga de Freitas, running in Flamengo Park, cycling at Vista Chinesa, beach Volleyball at Copacabana. The designs celebrate Brazilian culture, in engaging tributes to a unique host country.
