UK 2017 Platinum Wedding Silver Piedfort £5
The coin of the greatest Royal love story ever told
This Sterling Silver Proof Piedfort UK £5 Coin was issued by The Royal Mint to mark the longest marriage in royal history - Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness Prince Philip’s Platinum Wedding Anniversary. They were the first British royal couple to reach the incredible milestone of 70 years of marriage.
Pinnacle of craftsmanship from The Royal Mint
Importantly, this special Piedfort issue has a single coin edition limit of just 4,000 pieces making it more than three times more limited than the standard Silver Proof £5 coin, which has a single coin edition limit of 15,000.
The 'Piedfort' strike of the coin is twice as thick as the standard issue, which means it has been struck on double-thickness blanks - a tradition that dates back centuries for the production of coins for Monarchs and other dignitaries. It is the pinnacle of The Royal Mint's craftmanship.
It is a tradition still continued by The Royal Mint today, who strike a small number of Piedfort coins for each commemorative issue.
Struck in .925 Silver to a pristine Proof finish, the reverse design by John Bergdahl depicts the Queen and Prince Philip on horseback. The obverse features a special dual portrait which is the last portrait of the royal couple.
Strong sell-out history
Because Piedfort coins have considerably smaller edition limits than standard silver proof coins, they have some of the strongest sell-out records of any British coins. The equivalent Sapphire Jubilee issue sold out in just one week so it's remarkable for us to have any stock.
